If you were prescribed terbutaline (also sold under the brand names Brethine or Bricanyl) during your pregnancy, and especially if you used it for more than 72 hours and/or with the terbutaline pump, your child may be at increased risk for birth defects such as brain damage. Recent studies have linked brain damage in infants to using terbutaline during pregnancy.

Birth defects from terbutaline use during pregnancy include:

Also, if your child was exposed to terbutaline during your pregnancy he or she may suffer more advanced brain damage as they mature due to increased sensitivity to household chemical exposure and other environmental pesticides and pollutants.

A Duke University Medical Center research study chronicled in the February 2004 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics found that when pregnant rats were exposed to terbutaline during pregnancy, the terbutaline passed through the placenta to their developing infant rats' brains. This drug then caused the structure of their brains to change, thereby causing brain damage.

A follow-up study, also by Duke University Medical Center, concluded that fetal rat exposure to terbutaline caused newborn infant rats to be especially vulnerable to common pesticides and their damaging effects. The part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, the hippocampus, was damaged. There was also a decline of nerve cell activity. This study was published in the March 2004 issue of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology.
