Terbutaline sulfate is a drug approved to relieve and prevent attacks of asthma (including exercise-induced asthma). The generic drug, terbutaline, is also sold under the brand names Brethine and Bricanyl. Although terbutaline was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for the treatment of asthma symptoms, it is no longer widely prescribed for its approved use. However, the manufacturers of terbutaline have marketed the drug to physicians to control preterm labor.
Since 1974, more than one million pregnant women have been prescribed terbutaline to control preterm labor although it is not FDA-approved for this purpose. In fact, the FDA has found that, "no benefit from prolonged treatment has been documented," regarding the use of terbutaline for preterm labor.
The use of terbutaline during preterm labor has been linked to an increased risk to infants of:
- birth defects
- brain damage
- cognitive developmental delay problems
-
other side effects, such as:
- autism,
- speech defects, and
- movement disorders.
Also, infants exposed to terbutaline may be predisposed to reactions to common household chemicals like pesticides creating additional brain damage in your children as they grow older.
Maternal injuries may include increased heart rate, nervousness, and tremors (especially in the hand). Other possible effects to the mother may consist of: dizziness, headaches, heightened blood sugar levels, nausea, pounding or rapid heartbeat. Other potentially severe side effects to the mother, although rare, include angina, low blood calcium or potassium, extremely low blood pressure, and seizures.
If you were prescribed terbutaline (also known as Brethine or Bricanyl) for preterm labor, and you believe you or your child is suffering serious side effects from the administration of terbutaline, please contact us.
